Devontae Merriweather joins the Arizona Rattlers for his fourth season in the IFL. He was the honored as the 2019 IFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Following a rash of injuries to the secondary, Merriweather re-joined the Rattlers in 2021 in early August after spending time with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL).Â
Not skipping in a beat in his return to Arizona, Merriweather started the final three regular season games, leading to Rattlers wins all three contests. Merriweather led the team in tackles each game with 23 total stops, 17 of them solo tackles.Â
The 2021 Rattlers defensive unit ranked 3rd in the IFL allowing 68 touchdowns in the regular season. Additionally, Arizona’s defense allowed an average of just 35.9 points, good enough for second in the league. Merriweather played a major role in ensur-ing the Rattlers defense stayed at the top of the IFL in these rankings.
In the Rattlers’ two playoff wins, Merriweather again led the team in tackles every game, logging eight solo tackles and 14 stops total. Merriweather added three more tackles and one TFL in the United Bowl vs. Massachusetts, before exiting the game with an injury.
